Prayer: HOW LONG IS YOUR SWORD In Ephesians 6:12-18, Paul talks about the armor of God. You are to be well-equipped to face the enemy. He gives you a list of every piece of armor that should be in place. Your enemies are not flesh and blood, but against principalities, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Are you prepared? Are you able to fight against unseen forces? Satan and his demons are all around trying to defeat you. He walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. (I Peter 5:8.) Still, these are unseen forces. He may be there to accuse you and pour guilt on your head. The demons may tempt you with former sins and lusts. The Bible says to stand fast, and having done all, to stand. You are given these pieces of protection for your armor: truth, righteousness, preparation of the Gospel, faith and salvation. All of these are vital to quench the fiery darts of the wicked one. This protects you with a belt, a breastplate (think bullet-proof vest), shoes, shield, and a helmet. The only offensive weapons given to Christians is the Word of God – your Sword of the Spirit, and prayer. What Scripture do you have in your arsenal to strike out against the enemy? Is the Word planted in your heart? Can you resist the devil by saying “it is written…, as Jesus did?” When you pull your sword out of the holder, is it long enough to fight the enemy? A sword with only a handle will be a useless weapon. The more Scripture you learn, memorize, meditate upon, the longer your sword. Be prepared for the enemy who wants to defeat you and discourage you. Your knowledge of the Word and your prayers are your greatest defense. Joyfully, Joyce
