Dedicated to: Fallen Soldiers
Posted by: Gary Knoer in Kirkuk, Iraq
Prayer: THE FINAL MISSION The soldier stood and faced his God, Which must always come to pass, His uniform torn and bloody, His boots covered with sand and grass. "Step forward now young soldier, How shall I deal with you? Have you always turned the other cheek? To My Church have you been true? The soldier squared his shoulders and said, "No Lord, I guess I ain't. Because those of us who carry guns, Can't always be a saint." In war, there are few Sundays, And at times my talk was tough, And sometimes I've been violent, Because this war is awfully rough. I never took a penny, That wasn't mine to keep, And my family often went without, When the bills just got to steep. We took the war across the sea, To Afghanistan and Iraq, To defeat terrorism for once and all, So it will not come back. I've had to take a life at times, It was always him or me, I relive those battles every night, Freedom isn't free. I've never passed a cry for help, Though at times I shook with fear, As I knelt beside a dying friend, I've wept unmanly tears. I leave behind friends and family, Please help them understand, I know they will remember me, Long after I'm buried in the land. Some may ask, "Why did I go", To them I can only tell It was a sense of, "Duty, Honor, and Country", I felt, The day the Towers fell. Maybe I don't deserve a place, Among the people here, Many never wanted me around, Until the war was near. If you've a place for me here, Lord, It need not be so grand, I never expected or had to much, But if you don't, I'll understand. There was a silence all around the throne, Where saints had often trod, As the soldier waited quietly, For the judgment of his God. St. Peter then stepped forward, Took the weapon from his hand, And placed on the soldier's back, Golden wings. With a nod he'd understand. Then God said, "Step forward now, young soldier, I caught you when you fell, Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets, You've performed your mission well."
